The NES version >>3600785 >>3600808 is OK except for the wonky color palette, shrunk rooms and silly censorship (including but not limited to not being able to get your characters literally fucked to death). It was also the first version I ever played, but it's kind of pointless picking it to play the game for the first time if you actually have a choice.

Just go for the "enhanced"/V2 version, OP. About the guide thing: MM is not as obtuse as, say, Zak McKracken (and you actually have different ways of clearing some puzzles) but a hintbook won't hurt
