It was 1996 and I wasn't old enough to get a job yet and having a game meant playing that game and only that game until Christmas.

I played the hell out of Tobal No.1, every single day, and learned every character and marveled at the fact that Squaresoft was making more than just RPGs. Those years they also made shooters like Einhander, and arena fighters like Ehrgeiz, which though forgotten, basically preceded Powerstone by several years and even had playable Cloud, Tifa, and Sephiroth. Square was way more genre diverse than they are now.

Still haven't found a fighting game that matched the fluidity of Tobal's movement to this day. Soul Calibur has a similar movement system in 8way run but it's nowhere near as seamless as Tobal's. It's the one fighting game engine that I wish companies would clone already. Its graphics are extremely simple but that's also what allowed it to run at 60 fps. NTSC televisions top out at 29 fps and the result would be Tobal never missing a beat or slowing down or dropping frames.
