Doom 1 (ep. 1) and Doom 2 had some of the level best design in the history of FPS.

Heretic's just OK. Nothing really stands out. Here, have some environmental hazards and monsters and a key - now, on to the next door you go! Not sure what anon's remembering by 'puzzles' but I sure can't recall any (I replayed Heretic a month ago). Use your map if you get lost, you can't get lost this way.
