I liked them enough, even if they went progressively dumber and weirder by each book.

I'd say the first book is worth at least one read, as it actually captures the feeling of the first game to a pretty nice extent, even if it's hokey.

I was thinking they were just there as spares, and that you'd load those shells into the gun when you were alone and safe.
But yes, a regular bandoleer would make much more sense for a shotgun.

Well... they weren't flawless, but I enjoyed them enough for what they were.
I honestly expected them to be outright awful, but they really weren't as atrocious as I'd thought. I definitively think there could have been some changes done to them. Perhaps completely replace the final book, even if it was... "interesting" in it's own strange way.

Canon is such a dangerous word when talking Doom, Doom 3 is it's own canon, Final Doom, is that canon to the first games, or just canon to itself?

Fiocchi makes ammo for just about everything, even old obsolete revolver cartridges like 7.62x38R Gas Seal, or .455 Webley (even if those are a bit sub-par compared to original loads). They're decent enough for cheap plinking I suppose.
