I just beat DQ8 and it's probably my second favourite in the series after 2 (I've played 1 to 8, most of them several times with different versions except for 7 and 8)

The best part about the game was the overworld exploration, absolutely amazing. Gameplay was fun if only a bit on the easy side though that was to be expected (though combat is still more fun and challenging than any FF after 4); the skill system is good and bad at the same time, so was the item crafting system.

I liked the story, I'd probably rank it 3rd best story in the franchise after 5 and 7. The plot is weak at first, it takes a while for the story to bring in the real stakes, and sometimes the game has the player run on side errands for a bit too much, but the dialogue, characters and voice acting was very enjoyable for the most part (if just the pacing of the voice acting being too slow, as slow seems to the series moto). There are two moments that sucked though, one when you just defeated a Rapthorne-powered dog and yet two lousy guards was enough to imprison the entire party (wtf); and then right after that Marcello somehows manages to keep Rapthorne in bay by his willpower alone EVEN when the 7 sages were dead... Yeah that doesn't make any sense. This entire part should have skipped and felt like an unecessary errand just so they could close the Marcello chapter.

On the downside, it was harder to make money in this game than in any others in the series. Not that it matters much since the game is easy and you REALLY don't need to buy all the equipment in every town. But still, it's like the only real way to make money is to grind Gold Golem or sell items gotten at the casino, it's like the game expects you to do that or to do a lot of item crafting to sell all that shit.
