Nintendo made an adaptor, not sure how common it was. I know by the time I bought a GBP it wasn't being included with the GBP (and later GBC) link cable.

What the anon said though was that they would take it in turns to bring either GB with them. I.E. Brother A would bring the DMG and do DMG to DMG trades, while brother B would bring the GBC and do GBP/GBC trades. Then the next day they'd swap, so A could do GBP/GBC, while B could do DMG trades.
