I loved Fate of Atlantis, but adventure games are hard to talk about sometimes because they are very puzzle-heavy, and puzzle discussion is usually either 1) spoilers for people who haven't played, 2) people complaining about a puzzle that was too hard for them, 3) basically saying "hey remember this cool part?" which isn't that interesting as a topic.

Trying to talk about why a puzzle is cool is a little like trying to talk about why a joke is funny. Yes, you can do analysis and break down the pieces and how they are delivered, but appreciating it as an audience member is still largely a matter of "getting it."

I suspect you guys aren't very good at puzzles, and definitely aren't very good at analyzing puzzles. Like, do you think you can judge puzzle design by looking at a walkthrough or something? Of course bad puzzles exist (and I would say Grim Fandango has some) but there are many excellent ones in the genre.

The problem is that a good puzzle is like a good joke. The player has to follow along with the setup to get the payoff. On some level you have to "get it" in your head, and trying to explain the subtle clues and hints to someone else isn't likely to make them change their mind.

>this series got used as a punchline
It's not just Myst. Plenty of point-and-clicks have been bashed, and text adventures get it even worse than Myst does. Myst is just a popular example.

The problem is that most people suck pretty bad at analyzing games, and they REALLY suck at analyzing puzzles. Combine that with the understandable frustrating of being utterly stuck on something you can't solve, and people want to lash out and call shit outdated and badly designed and blah blah blah and link to Old Man Murray. Of course bad examples exist, but Myst is not one of them, as you know.

>King's Quest on the easier side
What? I mean, they're straightforward I guess, but I would not say KQ5 is an easy game for a beginner. And I'm not just parroting the "lol that one puzzle" comments the internet likes to make about KQ5, even as a fan I know the player can get screwed pretty hard and hit walls very easily without genre-savvy experience.

KQ6 isn't too rough though.

>really dated, old

Text adventures are certainly "old", but what makes them "dated?" The fact that other things exist? The fact that they have their own weird quirks and flaws?

The answer to the OP's question is to find out what is good about those old games, which is in the case of text adventures, is a whole discussion about the value/pitfalls of the parser and text-based clues in general. But it's definitely not a simple "lol it's dated" judgment, there are puzzles and interactions possible in text that simply can't be translated to a simplified mouse interface.

Finding those strengths and appreciating them is how you appreciate old games.

Arachnotron. Their fast projectiles are awesome and they play really well with Doom's turbo speed/dodging. Plus they have my favorite death sound, really feels like a satisfying "pop" with the super shotgun.

Nah, not even close. A real alternative is Ultima Underworld as someone said, though.

I'm not sure which game you're talking about but I'm having trouble remembering any slider puzzles in Myst.

In fact Myst is pretty good about NOT making any of the puzzles rehashes of stock puzzles like Towers of Hanoi, 15 puzzle, etc.
