For the shotgun, I really wanted to capture the kind of particular recoil impulse of a short-recoil long-gun, where the barrel recoils first, then hits the bolt, then the bolt travels backwards, and it kind of pauses abruptly as it hits the rear, then the barrel starts going back forward and the bolt slams forward.
Pic related is a pistol, but it's the idea.

The animation could probably need more tweaking, however.
