Better art style and lore. I think the medieval gothic horror theme worked better than the epic fantasy vibes that got worked into II and greatly expanded in III.

Music for Tristram is just fantastic for the mood. The dungeon music works by having random insane laughter, screams, and sounds of torture get louder as you get deeper into the Labyrinth, and thus closer to Hell. First time I played it I thought I was going crazy as the laughter started in the catacombs.

The grid system with fixed speed made combat a lot deeper. Difficulty isn't just a matter of "numbers go up + immunities." Dungeon levels are narrow with lots of choke points and doors to use to filter monsters into narrow areas. As the game goes on, maps open up, with Hell featuring large open rooms where enemies can't be engaged one by one. The grid system also made using terrain strategically more important. AI was also a larger part of the difficulty. Dungeon monsters are slow and approach head on. Goat men approach in a spiral pattern and will surround you in open areas, while their archers set up a circular perimeter and run as you break through to get them. Succubi fire shots at you but will turn and flee as fast as you can walk, meaning you can ONLY kill them by out smarting them as a warrior. You need to lure them into a corner, or around a corner and pop out at them.

Running in D2 kind of made speed irrelevant. Everything just blobs on the screen. Both your character and enemies have a hard time hitting moving targets with melee. You can miss fallen with a high level character over and over because your attack animation takes longer than their movement one. Same for players, so a super underpowered character can sprint past mob after mob without danger as long as they have stamina.

I is also harder more consistently. For many classes, normal Duriel and normal Diablo are the hardest parts of the entire game. DII is all about loot to up clear speeds, or to make melee playable. -cont

Or to sum up, D2 has deeper mechanics (although D1 is pretty damn deep and you need to know the meta for Ironman), and more content for the end game, D1 is more kino.

IDK what they were thinking with the D2 ones.

Actually does fit pretty well because the fringe of a pack will strut out towards you but then turn as you try to walk up to them and lead you into a pack of death knights or balrogs. Very much seduction mode there.

>try to kill one of these strippers
>they run away faster than you
>run across the whole level and wake every monster
>die

How did anyone play this? I consider myself a vet of 2/3 and the first shitty boss stun locked me to death before I grinded past him. Apparently basic enemies permenantly lower ho an shrines will lower Mana and stats forever.

Shit is retarded.

The first one.

Better atmosphere and art direction. More difficult, and positioning and strategy matter more.

D2 managed to have more monster variety, while at the same time skills made the variety matter less. The levels are so big that you can run around mobs. It's not like D1 where you might get trapped by acid spitters and spend the next ten minutes having to pick them off one by one.

That said, D2 I more rewarding as a loot slot machine and has a much better end game, with the higher difficulties having more content.

8 player D2 is great fun. D1 is the only one I enjoy single player though.

Too bad D3 was cartoony shit. They should have stuck with the horror action rpg style of 1.

>get raped by succubi who run away from you and lead you into mages, balrogs, and blood knights.
>finally a book of teleport spawns in the store
>mace or haste drops
>now I can just teleport on top of them and bash their fucking skulls in using stun lock

D1s difficulty makes getting good a lot more rewarding. Never really found a good way to deal with acid spitters at mid level though. They basically always fuck your shit up.

I must have been 13 when I took a screen shot on this level to get a better look at Diablo 1 succubi.
