It was basically SEGA's N64. Great first-party games like the Sonic Adventures and Crazy Taxi, but few good third-party titles, especially in the west (not counting the indie/unlicensed stuff). The Saturn was probably closer to the PS1 for obvious reasons. If Dreamcast was backwards compatible with Saturn, it would've been a lot better. I'm not sure what scared third parties away from the Dreamcast, possibly the failure of the Saturn and the onset of Sony made them shy away from doing business with SEGA.

I had Gex 64 as a kid and always wondered what the original was like. Tried it recently and was really underwhelmed. It has good ideas, but it's no Mario or Sonic. If anything it's more of a Metroidvania type game, but slower and less action-packed.

What really boggles my mind is why they were still using password saves on a disc-based game. That should've went out the door with save batteries (maybe with the exception of the Mega Man games, because they're Mega Man games).

I think Gex is one of those odd situations where due to the high emphasis on exploration, it works better in 3D.
