I'm an old fart who loved it but even I with friends who later got quite into Roguelikes have never personally met anyone else who played it.

Anyone who hasn't beat Rogue without spoilers or saves (obviously) isn't a real gamer.

My favorite DOS game from back then is still making waves.

It doesn't help that opiniond on what's fun vary wildly. I trust people genuinely enjoy Mario, but I find it very tedious and dull whereas some of my favorite games are disliked by a majority.

Not them but it is the way things usually go, not just with games. As things progress and more is produced expectations change. What was groundbreaking in 1980 may still be decent 30 years later, but when part of the original appeal was how groundbreaking it was compared to it's contemporaries wears off so does a portion of the appeal.

What silly question, there wasn't one overall design philosophy back then or now.

>you hear maniacal laughter in the distance

This freaked me the fuck out because I had no clue what it meant but it sounded so ominous and I nearly always died soon after. Years later I'd find out It's super useful but at the time it was the stuff of nightmares.

>Simon's Quest is so cryptic and outright deceitful at times it's a wonder that anyone can complete it it at all without a guide, much less get the best ending.

Yeah, that's what was said and why I was explaining that it is plenty do-able before you had this freak out about it having to be done your first try. The cryptic puzzle nature if SQ is one of the reasons it was one of my favorite NES games. But also bear note that compared to Rogue which I also didn't have a guide for but was obsessed with, SQ didn't come off as daunting, so much as just much more interesting than CV1 had been.

I don't even know what it was, my parents called it an "IBM clone" and I was never interested in what it was exactly, just the games.

There were 12 years in between playing this for the first time and then finally beating it. Not truly as hard as some others in the end, but having to figure it out alone really added to it.

Ehhh maybe. Still wasn't really a big deal at least to me. Like I said earlier it was a time when many games were obtuse and figuring it out was taken as par for the course so it didn't seem that odd.

Compared to Rogue which I also didn't even have a manual for, Simon's Quest felt really straight forward. So expectations likely played a role. I love games like that though and it's part of why SQ was one of my favorite games on the NES.
