I assume Leviathan knew what was going on in the Surface World, or was at least in formed by Bahamut who has a heavenly view of everything.

Leviathan doesn't just take Rydia to the Feymarch, he takes Edward to Troia, Yang to Baron and Cecil to Mysidia.

Cecil is reunited with KluYa and given the power necessary to overcome Zeromus.
Rydia is introduced to every demon, angel, spirit and maybe even the God analog of the game she'd ever want to summon
Edward is deposited where he can be of use to take down the Dark Elf
And Yang is exactly where Cecil needs him upon taking back Baron.
