For a while I've wanted to turn Shiren the Wanderer into more of a real roguelike with better balance and more interesting player options. Or likewise a Shiren inspired skin for Nethack.

If you want games like RPGs but with actual challenge you should give Roguelikes a try. Start with Shiren since it has enough JRPG that it will feel familiar, but enough of the RL formula to give you a taste of the fun in them.

Probably it's Shiren the Wanderer not using the warehouse.

I find both SNES and GBA unplayably bad on PSP. I've still used it for a few non-action things like Shiren, but anything needing timing feels like shit.

I've always played a lot more Genesis than either of them though so it didn't bother me a ton, but I would never recommend a PSP to someone wanting to emulate those systems.

There's your mistake. Most of Chunsofts Mystery Dungeon games are riguelites like PokemonMD but the first couple were more Roguelikes which are related but different.

I would recommend playing MD2 Shiren the Wanderer first as it has English translations and some guides if you get stuck. After that you should know enough to tackle Torneko on your own.

Shiren the Wanderer is another decent console roguelike that's pretty well designed for easing people into the genre.
