/vr/ - Retro Games

About to start this, what's /vr/ consensus on this series? Seems to be a big deal in Japan.

FYI, this English-patched version of Mystery Dungeon - Shiren the Wanderer 2 - Oni Invasion! Shiren Castle! works on Wii's emulator "Not 64" (but you must turn on "FB Textures" in the Video option)

Also, one more thing, for anyone who may be curious: this is the prequel to the first Shiren game on SNES/DS. The games that chronologically follow the first game are on GB/DS (Sabaku no Mahou), Wii/PSP, DS/PSP, and DS/Vita/Switch/PC, respectively and in that order. I'm not sure where the Shiren game on GB, Tsukikagemura no Kaibutsu, fits into the series chronology, though.

Is Alpha translated yet? I know there was a project but I never knew if it ever finished.
Also, SRW F needs a translation too.

on topic, pic related is said to be the best Shiren entry in the series, I haven't played it, but I played Shiren on SNES and DS and they're good roguelike RPGs.

Shiren series is/was popular in Japan, they just never brought them over to the west.
Shiren 2 on the N64 is also pretty good, you should check it out.

By the way, while there is that infamous Yamauchi interview where he says that "RPGs are for loner otaku" or whatever, it was thanks to him that the Mother series was made at all. When Shigesato Itoi approached Nintendo with the idea for the original Mother, Miyamoto initially rejected it, saying Itoi had cool ideas, but he didn't thought about how to make them into video games (Shiggy was never a big RPG fan, he always preferred action games), and also thought that a game by a celebrity like Itoi (who was already a famous writer and celebrity in Japan) would give a bad impression.

But it was Yamauchi who greenlighted Mother and ordered Miyamoto to call Itoi back.

Shiren 2, japanese-only but it's damn good.
