Finished that Ebisumaru SNES puzzle game. Boss battles sucked because they take too long and usually decide to stay away from the dog's poop, and fuck the stages where you have to guide an enemy to hit the switches for you.

What happens on the good ending, btw? I didn't score high enough to get it.

B-team/outsourced shite while the real Goemon team were making good Goemon games for the N64.

Definitely, but he's a hell of a designer. He goes to waste at good-feel.

We should email Ebisu and ask if that's still canon.

I thought Ebisumaru being female was just a thing for Goemon 2.

Ebisumaru loves girls (which contrast with his kind of gay attitude) and is also based on Etsunobu Ebisu.

Not sure, but here's my theory. I think Ebisu just stuck as a popular character and also he was supposed to resemble Etsunobu Ebisu (Etsunobu really does look like Ebisumaru).
I just think they made that ending as a kind of joke for just one game, then went back to having Ebisumaru as a male sidekick.

Ebisumaru was actually a girl on the "New Generation" games, but we all know these games are absolutely not canon.

Also his real name is James Dean.

Same here. But only with the original dev team.

No Ebisu, no Goemon.

The N64 games are the ones that were best localized, with decent translation, no censorship, etc. Goemon's Great Adventure's western localization lost the original opening and Impact cutscenes, I don't know why, but MNsG is full with opening song and Impact theme videos.

We've had a handful Goemon threads on /vr/, we love it here OP.

They're all great games, Mystical Ninja for SNES is great, but they improved a lot on the following sequels (which weren't released outside of Japan), 2, 3 and 4 are all great games worth playing.
The Famicom ones too, Ganbare Goemon 2 on Famicom even has a fan translation in english.

Generally, the most favorited ones are the N64 games, and for good reason.
Mystical Ninja starring Goemon is probably my overall favorite Goemon game. And Goemon's Great Adventure is also excellent. Both are in english and are highly reccommendable.

Goemon games after the N64 have been so-so. There's a couple PS1 games that play like the old Super Famicom games, but aren't as good (still worth playing if you like the series) and a 3D one that also isn't as good as MNsG, but the real downhill started with "Goemon Next Generation", a reboot of the franchise that spawned games on GBA and PS1. Basically they turned Goemon's characteristic art style into more generic anime-like aesthetics and sensibilities. Goemon fans weren't fond of that.
There is another Goemon game for PS2, it's more like a Zelda clone instead of an hybrid like MNsG was, and it featured a more stylized art direction than the traditional goemon, but less generic than the "Next generation" one, but the game was never released in english, and it haven't got good reputation either, it's just there.
Then Goemon made a final grand return for DS, in 2005. The DS Goemon game is back to the roots, the great humor and art style from old Goemon games is back, gameplay is also great and they added a sumi-e/ink art aesthetic to the game, reminiscent of Okami.
This was the last Goemon game released and probably the last Goemon game we'll ever see, as the Goemon Team has already left Konami and are nw Good Feel (subsidiary of Nintendo now, they made Wario Land Shake It, Epic yarn Kirby, amongst others)

RIP Goemon, you will always be one of my favorite vidya IPs.
