Here's the real story:

When Itoi was a young child his parents had taken him to a movie theater. While there he wondered off from his parents and eventually found himself within a theater. While inside he viewed a short section of the film "The Military Policeman and the Dismembered Beauty", a crime mystery film. The short scene he viewed was the scene below.

While maybe cheesy today this was the late 50's, such brutality was unusual for films. For Itoi being a kid this was his first experience with any kind of sexual content. Normally someone this young may begin to feel weird but positive emotions after first discovering sex however he also mistook the scene for a rape and murder, not just a sex scene that ends in a murder. Because of this Itoi began to feel conflicted emotions. He had just viewed sexual content and wanted to feel pleasure from it but the brutal nature of, what he thought was, it being rape made him question his feelings. It created a sort of weird balance of interest and pleasure and disgust and fear. This feeling resided in him for a while and went on to be something he remembered most from his childhood.

Giygas is meant to embody this sort of weird feeling. Giygas is meant to have players feel a sort of similar feeling. one of intrigue and fear, them not really knowing what they are being faced with.

Giygas is not a fetus or meant to symbolize rape or anything sexual, he is meant to represent a primal fear of what we don't understand and us trying to comprehend our emotions.

Most aren't really retro but there are some non retro Lovecraft games. For retro I can only think of games that just feature cosmic abominations like Earthbound with Giygas.
