It was definitely not the norm but also not something rich kids had either.
I was blessed with great relatives who would gift me consoles and games on my birthdays and other holidays, and I was spoiled by my aunt who would also randomly buy me a console I wanted just because she could and didn't have kids of her own. I knew kids with much richer parents who were only limited to 1 system because their parents didn't want to spoil them or maybe just because they were greedy. My parents were against me getting so many consoles and games, though. I still have most of it today and I'm glad I do.
Genesis+SNES combo was literally the best era of video games, if you had these 2, you were absolutely in heaven.
