It's a matter of imperfection and therefore, imagination. Compare it to a book vs film adaptation. 2D, the book, gives you just enough to interpret characters, settings, events in your own vision. 3D, the film, gives you too much. Everything becomes too real, as per another person's ideas. That's why imperfection is better; the alternative is too boring.

This applied to video games. They worked more out of less and you could see the craftsmanship. As technology improves there's less effort/more ease in the design, and that's why modern video games are the way they are.
