The Cotton photo isn't at that extreme of an angle, but taking shots from the side (with my camera at least) really helps it focus and pickup everything well. Straight on photos are nice, but end up with moire issues a lot more often.

Because the 480i photo is capturing two fields of video at once, resulting in more of the CRT's surface to actually be illuminated.

Managing to catch a single field of 480i can be a real bitch, I might add.
