/vr/ - Retro Games

>old enough that I've emulated all the 10/10 and 9/10 games in genres I like

I tried playing the 7 and 8/10s in genres I already like, but I can't enjoy retro games that aren't over the top amazing.
Just started HOMM3, it's the first strategy game I've ever played. Made it to the finale of the retake erathia campaign alright but I had only leveled up one hero past level 5 so in the griffin level the orange fuckers can just demolish all my cities while my main guy is in the field. Had to restart the whole campaign.

is it true that HoMM is an eastern european/russian thing?

I'm trying to think of examples of turn based video games, I know that a lot of strategy and RPG's games fit that criteria, but they could be any genre.

How is this shit fun to anyone?

>it all comes down to who can grab resources/create/merge armies/power up cities and heroes the fastest and most efficient way - zero strategy, just a glorified puzzle game
I'm not saying it isn't charming, just that it doesn't seem like a good concept to me. It just seems like a clunkier and more tedious Fire Emblem or Advance Wars. Seriously the backtracking kills it for me.
