It absolutely does get easier, but only when you're 200-500 in. By the time you get past 2000 learning new kanji is arguably easier than learning new words.
In the beginning you just visualize random strokes, over time you realize it's the same parts rearranged over and over again as >>8839630 half-identifies.

Once you get past the dunning kruger valley of despair you realize kanji actually makes japanese EASIER because most terminology is made from stringing together kanji readings. Trying to learn these without kanji is only slightly less terrifying than having to understand them when they are actually spoken. Trying to understand, say, sci-fi terminology with kanji is manageable for me whereas understanding it as spoken or through kanji-less retro consoles is not.
