/vr/ - Retro Games

Indisputably the best CRPG ever made and a credible candidate for best computer game ever made, period. The only flaw it has is not enough foreshadowing of Suldanessellar, otherwise it is PERFECT:

- ambient sound and music so good you can pinpoint your location with your eyes closed
- looks like an oil painting
- timeless gameplay that has adapted well to the touchscreen age
- deep enough gameplay people have written entire dissertations about the magic system, party construction, solo play, finessing level ups etc
- a fantastic villain
- combines the depth of WRPGs with the bold characterisation of JRPGs to achieve a perfect mix of stats, story and personality

I can see why this genre died

Are there any good western RPGs that are clean and wholesome and not full of dirty and perverted crap? Pic unrelated.

About to start this bad boy for the first time.

Any tips/tricks I should know beforehand?

Are there any games on the same level as Baldur's Gate 2 except turn based? I enjoy most things about it but rtwp really really sucks.

Of course it is.

For those retro games that you have played many times, what (if any) additional goals do you set yourself to make the game more challenging and interesting?

I'm not just talking about 1cc'ing your favourite side-scrolling beat 'em up, or "no reload" challenges on RPGs, but self-imposed limitations or personal "quests" with a bit more substance.

For example, I just completed the Planar Prison in Baldur's Gate 2 on core rules without killing a single Thrall, but killing each and every one of the Warden's hostiles. I also completed Nalia's Keep without allowing any of the surviving servants to get killed by trolls.

This is part of an overall play though where my aim is to witness every possible line of dialogue from every party member (which is fucking hard but not impossible).

Not that it matters, we all just create Baldur's Gate I threads and talk about BG2 in them.

What are some more old school PC RPG's like this, /vr/? I've been playing Wizardry 7-8 and Daggerfall, along with Icewind Dale 2. Anyone know of anymore GOOD games like these classics?

About to play this for the first time, what am I in for?

I got about 6 hours into Icewind Dale 1 then decided to read up on the other d&d games. BG2 seemed way more appealing so I said fuck ID and got BG2EE. I'm kind of bummed that BG2 doesn't let you create your whole party, it was super fun creating those characters. I spent a good 90 minutes making my party in ID. The lack of a story didn't keep me engaged though. Are there any other games like that that let you create a whole custom party?

Do I need to play BG1 to understand the story of BG2? Does much carry over?

Also, if I make a character based on what seems good without reading a guide, will I horribly gimp myself?

I've tried BG2 before but I've never gotten out of the first dungeon.
One thing I remember is that when I talked to people they gave me all these options but it was clear which option would give me the character, which makes me wonder: Do I need every character from the beginning of the game?

I finished BG2 Shadows of Amn yesterday. I started Throne of Bhaal, and after getting out of Saradush, i have to say this expansion feels really small. There were about 3 quests in that city. Does it get better?

What's that one game you always heard from your friends/the internet that was absolutely amazing but you never bothered to try it?

Baldur's Gate 2 would be the one for me, played a bit of the first around the time it came out and couldn't get into it, never bothered with Baldur's Gate games after that

It just didn't click with me.
