Would the popularity of MG/MGS in America have started earlier had we got either a port of the MSX MG games or an original game made for either the SNES or Genesis? Would you have wanted to see a Metal Gear game for one of these systems? Perhaps even Metal Gear Solid itself?

The thing about MGS is that the less you think about it, the better it is.
The concept of MGS is great and the way it's presented really works, especially the first time you're playing it, not knowing spoilers (at this point it's hard for someone to play MGS1 for the first time and not have spoilers, but we).

But the more you start thinking about the writing, dialogues, etc, the more you notice it's hard to take seriously because the plot doesn't make a lot of sense and has a lot of holes (also apparent on the rest of the series with shit retconned and what not).

But the presentation, direction, game design etc work cohesively and deliver a unique (although flawed in some aspects) experience.
It really was a game that had to be played in 1998 to appreciate it the most, not saying it "aged badly", but it certainly influenced the video game market greatly, so people have played a lot of other, newer games that do it better than MGS1, and when they finally play it, they get disappointed, or find it hard to play due to being "old".
Same deal with OOT, Fallout 2 and many others.

But make no mistake, Metal Gear Solid is a video game masterpiece. However Gray Fox > Liquid. The Liquid battle was based on the Gray Fox fight on Metal Gear 2 for MSX anyway.

It's fine, but the screen has a black frame so it looks tiny if you're playing on a CRT. It's meant to be played on an HD screen I guess.
