Why does the Dreamcast feel retro but PS2/GCN/Xbox feel modern?

I know that's a common sentiment on /vr/ and I feel the same way but nobody has ever put into words what exactly is going on with that.

From a technological standpoint, how do the 6th gen consoles compare? Aside from the Xbox obviously having an edge overall, what tricks do the rest have up their sleeves to keep them competitive?

Which was the best 6th gen system for homebrew and piracy?

Now that the dust has settled, was making sixth gen certified /retro/ a good idea?

I understand that I am inviting the schizo, sorry /vr/

With the 9th generation fast approaching this holiday season, Decisions are going to have to be made about one of the most controversial topics on /vr/. As the Playstaion 5 and Xbox SX release this end of 2020, the end of the 8th generation will push the 6th generation into a tricky spot. It sits as a system worthy of being /vr/, being the last of a great line of CRT based systems. It has also been denied /vr/ status in the past, however, despite now being older than the Dreamcast was when it received /vr/ status.

What will the consensus be when we reach 2021, and the discontinuation of these consoles will be long, long past?

6th gen technically becomes retro within the next ~6 months

So Gamecube, Xbox and Playstation 2 will be retro when the new console generation hits, right?
