No point for studio level films of the era shot on 35mm (like Terminator, Ghostbusters, Lethal Weapon, etc). But for B movie Horror, Action, Comedy, Erotic Thriller, it's worth it for the better artwork (see pic vs. the DVD artwork http://www.joystickdivision.com/2008/04/joysticks_the_greatest_video_g.php)) and the "grainy" picture that often adds to the feel of these low grade slasher, martial arts, zombie movies (these movies often look worse when they get a DVD release, since they're basically just rips from the VHS or lazily transferred from the original tapes [most of these movies were shot on tape anyway as opposed to film, so VHS level fidelity is good enough]).

And like LPs, there's a lot of obscure crap that never saw a DVD release.
