I'm trying to get into shooters. Gradius Gaiden is my favorite so far. What do you guys recommend? Like really essential stuff, and which versions are the best? Also none of the wacky stuff like Parodius; I like space and alien planets and sci fi themed ones the most, but historical seems interesting too.

Gaiden. V is great too, but I like the more "classic" weapons in Gaiden. The music and visuals are also much better.

Nah, Gradius 5 is great, but the music and environments aren't as good as previous Gradius games. Gaiden is my favorite.

While I still like vertical a little better, you're absolutely right about the great hazard/level design in horizontal games. Gradius is definitely one of my favorite series.
