I don't know why that console has RGB written on the underside, but the Mega Drive (and basically every home console SEGA released) has excellent native connectivity regardless of region or revision, so with the Mega Drive, it can both output composite and RGB without any modification whatsoever. From a technical standpoint, there's no real preferred output type for the console as a whole, but there were games (like the sonic series) that relied on quirks of low quality signals for visual effects because the developers knew most people were going to play the games over composite (or RF).
