Yeah VIII tried too hard to be a grand romantic story of fate. But at least they were going for something.

What kills me is the amount of people who rightly trash VIII's shortcomings but praise something like IX as a masterpiece. Seriously, the whole Terra genome thing feels like someone at Square was like "Hey this game is cool and all but you need to put in some existentialism like all our games have since VI" and it just comes off like a "LUL RANDUM XD" badly timed non-sequitur.
