They're are labyrinth and resource management games. Modern JRPG fans HATE labyrinths and mazes. It's a similar situation where modern Zelda fans go back and play 1-2, and just abhor them because even though its officially the same series the style of game is just radically different and in fact the opposite of the kind of game they like.

Tackling a giant maze and beating it without any guides is a really cool idea. Having abstract combat that is off-screen boils it down so that you're more of a manager getting reports rather than fighting yourself. Adding animations and graphics doesn't add anything to it and are in fact a step back. Both labyrinths and abstract combat are right out of the spirit of D&D.
