>11 weak on music
I would blame the underwhelming soundtrack on the soundfont they used. The tunes themselves are fine, it's the instrument choices that make them all sound kinda similar or forgettable. Take the same songs and put them in a different format, and you'll hear a difference.

Even in it's own soundfont, there are some good tracks, Acid Man, and Fuse Man are a few. But the best is the stage select theme, which imho is the best select theme in the series.

While on the subject, here's a neat track that combines Wily 2 with Wily 11. If you ever got MM2 vibes from Wily 11, this will show you why.

They're all great.
4=3 > 2 > 5 > 6 > 1
But six loses points for having a lackluster OST.

There's no 'correct' first game to play. Truth is that they are all fundamentally the same. 1 planted the flag, but is naturally clunky because it is less refined than later titles. I only had copies of 2, 3, and 5 when I was a kid, and didn't get a chance to play the others until emulation became an option. What I can say for certain is don't start with 7.

3 > 9 > 4 > 10 > 2 > 8 > 11 > 7 > 6 > 5 > 1
I grew up with a copy of 5 and have a soft spot for it, but it really is a low effort entry. Also they're all good like >>7194461 says.

4 > 5 > 6
4 is simply more of what made 2 and 3 great, if a little bit less challenging. Objectively, 5 is probably the least good, but I have a soft spot for it because I grew up owning a copy. 6 gets points for the Rush Adaptors, but loses just as many for its decline in level design and boring soundtrack.

Going off my memory playing it on console:
* Single player had weapon reloading IN A QUAKE GAME.
* It had a very unstable framerate on the 360, which was the most popular console at the time. It might have been patched if it didn't cost tens of thousands of dollars for MS to certify it, which was their policy at the time.
* It had some shitty vehicle sections
* Most of the campaign blends together outside of Stroggification
* It eventually blended in with other sci-fi shooters around this time that were were trying to ape Halo

I regret not playing the Q2 port that it came with it before selling it, that shit has a banging soundtrack.
