See the big C17 cap? That's to filter the power in but US model SNES don't have this cap, they moved it to the power brick for some reason. So if you use a non-OEM brick there's absolutely no line filtering in there.

It may be that Ricoh were new to using TQFP packaging and had trouble with it. This was fairly new stuff back then, just replacing the oldskool poke-through DIP packages. Or maybe that the SNES chips were CMOS and they were new to that and had trouble figuring it out. Both are possibilities.

You have made sure to mod your SNES by putting a 16V cap at C16, right /vr/? Most SFCs have that cap but it was usually not on US models because fukka u gaijin. Many SNES CPUs have been crispy fried that way. Don't let it happen to you.

No it's shitty power filtering. The big C17 cap was usually omitted from US models as a cost-saving measure which means the CPU isn't protected properly from voltage spikes.

The C17 cap. This is usually absent from US models.

SFCs have an extra filtering cap at C17. This is usually left off US models and can be added to improve power line filtering. One may also replace the 7805 with one that has a 2A rating.

I am told that SFCs usually have the big C17 cap but it's often missing from US models.

SNES PCBs have a spot at C17 for a large filter cap but it wasn't always present. You can add one yourself and it will add better protection from voltage spikes. Also note this board is a later RGB model which has improved filtering over the SHVC (which accounts for ~~80% of dead SNESes)
