>You're always perfectly capable of fighting whatever is in front of you (except at the very end of the game), and aya always bravely faces whatever it is without "horror"

I fucking hate this definition of survival horror as it's not only VERY, VERY Modern with games like Amnesia the Dark Descent, but it seems to solely include an entire genre of horror games where you can't fight back and assume that's all the genre is.

Survival Horror to me will always be what Resi 2's manual described it as

>You see an enemy in a hallway
>You can try to avoid it or shoot it if you have the bullets
>What's more valuable to you, your bullets or your health?
>What's worth it to you?
Tight resource management that's more about the idea that you could run out of supplies and be forced to make bad decisions rather than being brutally hard, and forcing you to run out of supplies unless you do things one specific way.

FFS Sweet Home, the game that was considered the first Survival Horror had turn based JRPG combat.

Silent Hill 1 is probably the only PS1 game I'd say it's worth paying $60 for still.

No, it's not perfect but the way the grainy visuals of the PS1 mix with the atmosphere and design has been imitated but never replicated. It's genuinely unsettling.

Some of the enemies are underwhelming but **ONLY** by the standards the later games set. The combat holds up remarkably well compared to the RE clones of the time even if shit like dodging is a lot more clunky.

Seriously, there's a reason it's considered one of the best games of the generation.

The respawning enemies in a couple of enclosed areas like the hospital really are shit though, but that's the worst the game gets to.

Bear with me, for a moment. I was wondering whether or not games are doing better in terms of story-line nowadays compared with the past.
I’m asking this because I stopped playing games some time ago when I picked up reading books again.
Everything seems to dull in comparison.

Maybe the developers don’t really care much about stories or plots being written for their games. But,
• Was this always the case?
• Am I just blinded by nostalgia or have video games always been poorly written?
Could be the fact that I have autism/ Adhd and I’m entertained by flashy lights and stuff.

I can’t think of anything which would compare to Cormac or Faulkner. [In terms of game story, of course.]
• Also, do you think video games are more creative than books?
• What about retro games compared to the ones nowadays?
