I never thought Somari was good. The physics and hitbox are abysmal, it's not close to being even a decent game IMO, but maybe I should retry it and see if I was too judgamental, but that's what I remember.
Video games aren't easy to program as another anon said. It's no surprise that games that tried to be actual ports of other games to Famiclones ended up being Spectrum-tier (ok, maybe not that bad).
The good bootlegs are the ones based on real good games, and just have some sprite changes, like the many Mario hacks from the early 90s, all of them are hacks of legit good games.

Bizarrely, it's one of the better western-developed platformers.
The music is also great.

Why does this cart label ooze so much soul?
Anyone know the original artwork where this comes from?
Also, Mario hack/famiclone general I guess.

91 or 92, famiclones were all the rage in my country. One friday night, the power in the whole neighborhood went off, but I still went to the video club, hoping power would come back later, I couldn't miss renting a game for the weekend. When I arrived there, to my surprise, other kids were also there, also wanting to rent games. The store owner used lanterns so we could see the carts and choose. I chose pic related (mario hack of MC Kids).
Power didn't come back that weened, but can you believe I was just happy holding the cart and looking at the label? Simpler times, man.

Yeah I remember that interview.
M.C. Kids is honestly a good game, and dare I say one of the best western platformers I've played on the Famiclone, I had this Mario hack.

Blockbuster didn't exist in my country until much later, and they only carried N64 games (and sometimes SNES, but it was already past the SNES' time).
I remember renting on Blockbuster, but I have better memories of being even younger and going to local mom and pap video clubs and renting bootleg Famiclone stuff.
M.C. Mario was the shit.

Mario hacks are the tits.
The good thing about Mario hacks is that most of the times the original games are actually great. Back in the late 80s and early 90s it was a great way to discover rare japanese games. Although sometimes they were well known games, like Super Mario 6 (Tiny Toon Adventures) or Mario 5 (which was actually SMB2USA, no changes as far as I could tell)

But then there were some like Super Mario 14:
