The Katana Wireless

Works on Ps1 and Ps2. Don’t let the D-Pad fool you, it’s better than the OEM. That being said these things cost more than Wavebirds now days. Good luck getting one at a reasonable price.

I've heard nobody else talk about this, so I'll just do so myself. Sony had an officially licensed wireless controller for the PlayStation 2 called the Katana, or the Katana Force, or the Wireless Force, or whatever the fuck it was supposed to be called (not to be confused with the katana hilt controller Hori made for Onimusha 3: Demon Deige) and it's my favorite. It uses 2.4GHz so latency is largely a non-issue, plus unlike the GameCube's WaveBird, you can (optionally) have vibration enabled. Even with all this aside, the d-pad on the Katana is superior (it's a solid piece you can rest your thumb in the middle of instead of what is otherwise effectively four buttons) so it's ideal for me when playing original PlayStation games when analog just isn't an option. I knew exactly one person who owned just one of these controllers growing up, so I'm unsure as to their ubiquity. They come in three colors that I know of: grey/black, metallic blue, and silver. I'm don't usually give a shit about wireless controllers, and apparently there are wired versions with the exact same molding, though I've never gotten my hands on one in person.
