That might be because Protection from Petrification is a first level Wizard spell. You can buy a cheap one from High Hedge to scribe.

Here are some notes about making money without exploiting:
>Winter Wolf pelts can be sold in the Nashkel Store for 500gp each.
>Wyvern Skulls can be sold to Thalantyr at High Hedge for 500gp each.
>If Officer Vai is already gone, you can continue to sell Bandit's Scalps to the bartender at Feldepost's Inn for 25gp each.
>Identifies aren't a flat 100gp each, some places do it for cheaper. The cheapest (as I recall) is the armor vendor at the Nashkel Carnival, who will identify any item for 50gp.
>Finally, anyone with at least a 16 Charisma in the top character slot will get a discount at vendors, commensurate with how high their Charisma is.

Right in the middle. Less combat than IWD, less wordy than PST. Arguably the best of all three for having a good balance between both.
