Everybody who has said big caliber slow bullets are inaccurate is dead wrong. The 45-70 especially a heavier 400 grain load can be used to hit shit 500-1000 yards away, it is a rainbow trajectory. You use a Ladder Sight ("artillery sight") to compensate for the bullet drop.

You're not applying Tactics properly. Not all FPS maps are a straight fight.

Can you get weak enemies to stand together for grenade hits? Grenades and rockets arent intended to only do 100 damage, every additional target that takes splash is like free ammo for other weapons.

Also there are enemies you can use the Axe on, why wait until you run out of ammo before you use the axe. You need to think in Efficiency terms. If this is AD the shadow axe is preferable to straight combat because it fazes with every hit and it can even stunlock a shambler.
If you got a monster isolated away from others, its not a bear to take on with the axe, just go ahead and take them out that way. Think Ahead.

In the water below there's a depression and inside there's a Ring Of Shadows. Makes you invisible to monsters that havent seen you yet.

Grab it and beat street as fast as you can back upstairs to go through the shambler trap. The shambler will teleport in but wont see you and youll have just enough time to get through the Gold Key Door.
