Can we finally admit it's not only flawed, but mediocre?

I just smashed my TV in front of 30 guests at my party because of this game. My wife just took our crying kids and said they're all spending the week at a hotel. This game has ruined my life and my party. I can't handle this anymore. Goodbye Mario. I am no longer a fan.

Is this the most amazing game on the system? It seems like we're not allowed to say anything bad about this game on this board, so let's talk about how objectively kino this game is.

Is this the most overrated game on the system? Feels more like a tech demo than a full game. Wet Dry World is literally a test map.

It's no masterpiece

Why did later 3D platformers fail to recapture the gameplay of Super Mario 64? It is still the tightest one out there and the one that has aged extremely well. I would say that it is the second most important videogame in history behind SMB but its influence isn't as apparent because while often imitated it hasn't been surpassed yet.

I always see discussion about DOOM wads and Sonic fan games, but never about Mario 64 rom hacks despite the scene becoming fairly advanced over the years.
Have you played any good ones? Any shit ones?
I just finished a playthrough of Mario Party 64. It was nice finding a rom hack with 100% custom content and a reasonable difficulty. I hate rom hacks that force you to use save states to beat it.

What's the most overrated retro game in your opinion?

Picrel is mine. Its not a bad game by any means, but its a "cheap shot" type of a game. Relying too much on wonky controls with camera angles constantly working against you, and calling it a challenge.

I was 10 years old when this came out and I'm going to be honest, I didn't like it. It didn't feel like a Mario game to me like Ocarina of Time felt like a Zelda game. I didn't care for a single 3D Mario game until 3D Land came out.

I've tried many times over the years to enjoy a comfy play through on Mario 64, but I can't get into it.

I don't want to say the game is overrated or anything like that, but I feel like it definitely hasn't aged well, and the fact I didn't grow up with it (I was a PS1 kid, the only Nintendos I ever had were a Gameboy) doesn't help. I just can't get over the frustrating way Mario handles, or the way the camera fucks with you at every possible opportunity; but I guess those are things you just have to let go, and appreciate the game for what it is.

I remember playing this game when I was like 6 years old when I would get dragged out shopping with my mom, and they had those demo consoles. She would practically just leave me stood there playing on this while she went around the mall shopping kek. It was the first truly 3D game I'd ever witnessed, I just ran around the castle for probably hours, and I want to recapture that nostalgia but sadly, through adult eyes, it doesn't hold up.

>Yoshi locked behind 100% completion and you can't even ride him
>powerups are now on a timer instead of lasting till you get hit
>Back to fighting Bowser multiple times when SMB3 and SMW saved him for the final boss
No actual platforming outside the Bowser Levels, Tick Tock Clock, and Rainbow Ride
>Mario has a mickey mouse voice and none of the iconic sound effects return

How did this shit not flop hard in the eyes of Mario fans?
