I personally never found mother 1 that “difficult” but I think it all depends if you go into the game realizing that there’s a DQ level of grinding required.

How are you enjoying the game? I love how experimental the narrative is for its time but personally find the game enjoyable mostly due to the enormous map sizes containing absolutely nothing combined with the absurd encounter rate that completely goes against wanting to explore. Factory and Mt. Itoi are meme dungeon design as well but I think they fixed it in Beginnings (?)

idk why but i love everything about Earthbound Zero's design despite it basically being a dragon quest knockoff
Everything is so simple but it captured the feeling of being a kid wandering out into the world insanely well for being on the NES

Between the first trip to Magicant and picking up EVE, you have to go through both factories, the desert, the swamp, and most of the final mountain. And the only real story advancement going on during all that is Lloyd's character arc.
