I think you have to consider the audience for such things and where the target which they were aimed at. It could be that PC has such great backwards compatibility so nostalgia is not necessary as a large number of the games can still be continually played to this day.

As for essential PC games, I have difficulty limiting it to just a few as games by Origin, Lucasarts, Sierra, Microprose, Westwood, ID, Apogee, Epic Megagames, and Blizzard on the whole are amazing.

It is the only one in the series I played. Was so good, I wanted to try the rest out. I feel I jumped in at the right time/game since it was so good. They did signal to do the opposite of whatever anything with the golden gleaming eyes instructed based upon an earlier cutscene.

I liked the Epic and Apogee EGA games just as much as the console games of the day. It was a different dimension of fun to be had on PC.

I kept most since they tend to come with a lot of interesting things inside.

Same, it was a great time for my discovery to so many games. Sharing games with friends and family was a great way to diversify and explore all sorts of interesting titles.

Master of Magic combined two of my beloved games at the time: Civilization and Magic: The Gathering. I think I read there is a new version of it now, is that any good?

Admittedly "He who would steal the flame must die" could have been interpreted as the bird cultist propaganda. Maybe instead they could have had a lower spike pit leading to the flame such that the shadow could use the body as a platform to reach the flame would have been a better design.

It is the flipped version of the first game's box. The first game had the smaller stout portion as the base, and the taller portion on top. THe form factor of the box really distinguished the games on the shelves, and might draw your attention to it. Think of all the different bottle shapes to your favorite drinks.

I see I have a shadow, just like in PoP2. That was taken for this thread today. If I had used an older image I would have probably picked this one.

I did. They were good times for me. Some games had interesting copy protections. I did get some patcher program which removed them from a lot of games, but they were not all nuisances. There is a charm to some code wheels, papers with blue ink on brown paper preventing photocopies, and in depth manuals/extras adding to the overall package of having the games. I think my cousin had that Tandy computer, got me started with PC gaming before I got my own 286-12.

I think it was a great experience. I went from a 286-16 to 486DX-40 and there were amazing games which were not on consoles with their own unique mechanics and personality. Pretty much you read the games requirements and recommendations on the game box and you'd have a good idea what it took to play a game.

Somehow it was not as confusing as you made it sound. Even a kid could understand enough to get going on them back then, since the software came with manuals which would walk you through. I remember some games like Wing Commander 2 needed expanded memory, while most wanted extended memory, then there are the rare few like Zone 66 or Ultima 7 which had their own unique memory management such that a nearly blank boot disk was necessary. Much like putting a computer is today, if it fits it sits, ISA slots were keyed and a specific size so you couldn't mess that up. SCSI required terminators. In addition to the manuals, you can always check the included readme file or whatever pirate nfo file.

TL;DR: it was not hard at all, just read the manual

In retrospect, I thought Mortal Kombat was the worst game I played, but I think this one may be worse. If I remember correctly, you can fail the whole game on the 2nd screen in, and the game won't even put you in a failstate to restart, it will let you continue on like normal not knowing you fucked yorself. In order to continue on properly, you needed an couple items from later and come back to the 2nd screen to get it. It also didn't help I did not have that ReelMagic card the game needed to play properly. At least the box was very interesting which caught my eye, I just wished it played as good as the Sierra, LucasArts, and Westwood point & click games I was accustomed to.

Those big box PC games in the back. Sure brings back memories.

I remember going to EB on a Black Friday, there were no lines or camping outside then (you can just walk in whenever) and just picking up the Total Annihilation Commander Pack (wish I kept its box) for $10USD. Being convinced on boxart and description/sample imagaes on the back to pick up games like Sam & Max: Hit the Road. Even the variety of console games on display were nice to explore. Now all the shops around me pretty much are Funko Pop! figures and foam Minecraft swords everywhere with a few games.

I got an Asian Dreamcast in that day, so I didn't participate in the US launch. To my memory, no one did. Aside from 3 people, including myself who had a Dreamcast, everyone, said "I'll wait for the PS2." There was no protection nor saving Sega.

I'd still want to hear the voices. I bought the disc version back then because I did not have a CD-Drive back then. Now that my 486DX4 has a CD-ROM drive, I could take advantage, but I gotta find the right images to burn. The ScummVM 1.9 Collection torrent seems to have the games in a different file format than what the computer accepts. If you know where I can find them, I got some CD-RWs to play around with (or I can got out and get some CD-Rs).

It's a 486DX4 100mHz and I primarily want to use it to play DOS games. Win98 is just for a newer DOS, also make use of some of my old anime screensavers, desktop wigets, Tenshindo, Minesweeper, and that Win95 Puyo Puyo 2. I do remember using Win 3.0, but all I ever used it for was Reversi and Solitare.

I forgot something also great for me on a personal level since I was looking for more Star Control 2 goodness. Hard to believe I forgot since I mention it a lot on these DOS threads:
Solar Winds

I guess I'll throw in:
Silverball
Pinball Dreams
Extreme Pinball

As they are more of the same pinball I loved with Epic Pinball.

Also I remember going through some Elf games from DOS/V.

That's what the power of Google helps with these days. There were cracks and if bootlegged a nfo/txt with the solutions to the code wheels.

I do like the bog box PC games I kept. Just thinking of some advantages of the "small box" games which I only have a couple. I remember aisles of big box PC games in Microcenter, Fry's, Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. On shelves as high as you can reach, down to the bottom near your feet, all of them vying for your attention to purchase. I guess you have to be there.

>>3780264
I think there are a couple of them which do, already increasing the price of them.
