My theory involves four deficiencies: illiterate people, people with stunted imaginations, people who can't connect with other people or characters, inability to understand metaphor.

Another big one is low self-esteem, many rpgs involve getting together with friends, having romances, and these things remind the spergs and autists what they're missing out on. Immediately it makes them uncomfortable. So they retreat to dry games with no depth, just jumping on platforms or shooting at pixels with no context or plot.
