I don't feel there is much ambiguity on the first playthroughs perhaps, but once you replay, get the best endings and find all the clues, everything should be clear. The player is outright told the most important parts in cutscenes, and then details and sub-plots like the drug thing can be put together.

The game even outright explains the ghosts.
