I think I've mentioned it before but I still don't get how this is a "Zelda killer" in any way. Never mind that it came at least 6 years after the fact, aside from the puzzles it doesn't do anything well at all, and I certainly wasn't impressed by the grimdark animu plot either.

Not really. Dark Savior has a great story for half the game but it's clear from all the preview and supplemental material, not to mention the game itself, that it is unfinished. It's a shame because it's really interesting, but that's what it was and will always be.

Alundra and Landstalker are games that had the care put into them to make them complete experiences. You have the excellent dungeons and puzzles in Landstalker and you have the dark story in Alundra - both of these are magnifications of the stuff that DS wanted to do but just couldn't do to whatever time constraints the team was under. As it stands they are just more confident and enjoyable works.

Also lol at no one even mentioning Timestalkers. Good thing too. I wish LadyStalker would be translated, since that's probably got a good deal more going for it than Timestalker.

Alundra is an action RPG where you actually enter peoples' dreams, with (from a story perspective) surprisingly disastrous results. It's a Zelda-type game, but I don't think it's quite as non-linear as you want (dungeons in a set order and all that). It's on PSN if I recall, so that's a good place to play it. It also might not be as "dreamlike" despite the description above.

For something perhaps more stream of conscious, maybe Legend of Mana? It's a game you make up as you go along, ha.
