I've been playing Cossacks with some friends of mine over the last few weeks and it's great fun, but it certainly has overpowered units

>Archers and Tatars kill buildings faster than entire batteries of cannons and mortars, while being virtually free and instantly produced (Archers) or being as fast as any cavalry, easily riding through enemy defences and having the longest non-artillery range in the game (Tatars)

>Russian Spearmen are best in the game and completely slaughter European Pikemen in equal numbers, making Russia the undisputed master of no-peacetime, rushing games

>We had to ban Mercenary Sich Cossacks in our games because our matches would just boil down to who could mass more of them without running out of gold and causing a mutiny, they are the fastest unit in the game and are just too good in raiding towns

Etc. But no RTS game is perfectly balanced, and Cossacks is certainly one of the best RTS games ever made. I'm not even sure its unit count was ever topped in an RTS. Total War beats it but it's not a pure RTS. Controlling anything from hundreds to thousands of units like it ain't no thang after playing games like Starcraft where you can only select like 12 units at a time tops for years was really mindblowing.
