After Hyrule became flooded, the waters receded, and the descendants who wanted to rebuild Hyrule tried to reconstruct it from memory. Hyrule Castle was chosen to be located south of the old castle, at the former site of Lon-lon ranch, for its elevation provided some protection, with the waters of Zora's Domain flowing around the area to provide a natural moat, then flowing south east to connect to old Lake Hylia. Those who wanted to re-establish Kakariko had to look elsewhere. To the south, the rocky terrain leading from Lake Hylia to Gerudo Valley had been disturbed by the flood, replaced by a stagnant marshland. To the southwest, a small desert served as a reminder of the Gerudo. So the new Kakariko was established to the west of Hyrule Castle, the citizens discovering a forest to the North, ending at the western part of the mountain. They named this forest the Lost Woods after their myths of the Kokiri forest to the east, rumored to curse trespassers into skeleton warriors. Though the Kokiri Forest had been destroyed by the flood, the sages had hoped to remove the curse of the Kokiri by building the Eastern Palace there, on the old site of the Forest Temple that had once served as a protective fortress.
