Mystical Ninja starring Goemon for me. It's not modern Japan but that only makes it even better.

While I also prefer the traditional side-scroller ones, saying MNSG is shitty or not good is a bit disingenuous. Maybe it's your personal taste, but I really enjoyed MNSG, the sense of traveling all over Japan is pretty fun, and while there are only 5 castles, I thought they were all pretty fun, decent mix of action "clean every enemy on this room" type of stuff, and actual platforming set pieces with some puzzle solving here and there. Not to mention one of the best/most funny and memorable villains and plots in the whole series.
I definitely don't encourage anons to skip on it.

MNSG is so good at what it does, though. Which is making a big adventure 3D game. It having "only" 5 castles doesn't stop it from having many other locations, the way up to each castle is like another level, or set of levels, cleverly linked together to give a sense of travelling across all of Japan.
The camera is a given complain, but honestly I don't think it was that bad to the point of making the game unenjoyable, it's a small annoyance that only really gets in your way if you're used to modern gaming free camera, otherwise it was fine for the time.
The coop is also a given, since it'd be hard to make a 3D game like that work with simultaneous 2 players unless you split the screen or something, although it would have been interesting.
I also think it has some of the best humor in the series, and the best set of villains. The ending is genius.

I think GGA is at least on the same level as Goemon 2 and 4, and think the level design and towns are probably the best in the series, in my opinion at least.
MNsG has a different pace, it's a unique kind of game within the franchise and I like it for it. I love being able to travel all across Japan.
