Kid Chameleon belongs towards the bottom, a brilliant game with great depth and challenge.

Kid Chameleon. It gets shat on for being a SoA production, with the typical GEMS music and not the best graphics, but the level designs are brilliant and plentiful, the abilities are very cool, and it presents a challenge level not frequently seen in the genre of pure 2D platformers. It is one of the best designed platformers of the era, and it is a real shame more people won't give it a chance.

It's better than any Mario by objective metrics.
>more levels
>more powerups, better powerups that are more interesting
>better enemy AI
>actually challenging
Those who are whinging about controls or "jank" never cleared Bloody Swamp, and it shows.

Kid Chameleon
Dune
Alien Soldier
Skeleton Krew
Xeno Crisis
The beauty of the Mega Drive is that everyone has a different pick of favourites. You can damn near pick up a game at random and have a good time with it.

>If you think NES/SNES Marios lacked in challenge you obviously haven't played them
I have played them, beaten them all, I did not grow up with them. On the contrary, if you think NES or SNES Mario games WERE challenging, then you have never played a challenging game. The only one in which you are not drowning in lives is the first one and lost levels, and even then, it can be completed in less than 10 minutes, and you are likely to lose only one or two lives in the process if you have any sense of reaction speed or pattern recognition. The games after that all allow you to essentially fly over the levels, absolutely circumcising any sense of challenge they may have had. Get back to me when you've cleared Bloody Swamp in Kid Chameleon.

Are we finally begining to realise just how poorly designed and jank the Mario games always have been? Kid Chameleon does not have water levels, by the way, just one of the many ways in which it mogs Mario.

I am going to play a good 2D platformer with actual challenge instead.

Trying to flex by playing a Mario game is laughable. Play a real man's platformer.
