Dreamcast did amazing on the first year. Then, right after PS2 announcement (not even release), Dreamcast sales slowed down a lot. Add piracy to it and you have the whole story.

According to this data, by January 1st 2001, there were 4,280,000 Dreamcast units sold in the US vs 1,460,000 Playstation 2s. Why just 3 months later, Sega surrendered in a battle they were winning? Was the number of people buying a Dreamcast only to pirate games so high?

>It wasn't discontinued because it was a "failure" though
True. The day the Dreamcast got discontinued it had 4+ million units sold in the US alone. While the PS2 was around 2 million. Sega simply didn't have the eonomy to keep supporting it.

It had a great first year, but Sega didn't have enough money to keep it afloat. Also, many people used their systems to play pirated copies instead of buying the originals.

>Dreamcast was successful, but Sega was going out of business by then and it couldn't save them.
Curiously, the Dreamcast experienced the best first year that generation.

With some additional money, keeping EA Sports games and getting exclusivity to some Sony-exclusive series, the Dreamcast could have been a success. However, you can hardly put up a challenge if you're already beeding out.
