Amen anon. While you can absolutely make a case for Banjo being a better paced game compared to DK64, the unfortunate reality is that none of Rares N64 collectathons are really all that fun to play on a moment-to-moment basis.

None of the platforming is particularly challenging or complex, the puzzles will 99% of the time boil down to "Use ability X on thing", said ability having to be either unlocked or temporarily activated via a mumbo hut, both of which require you to backtrack through the level just to get to the damn thing.

Even if you play DK64 where there are collectables to spare and you don't even need to bother getting more than half to complete the game, very few of the collectibles are challenging or engaging to get. There's no challenging combat. There's no intricate puzzles that aren't just mindless busywork. Its just mindnumbing collecting with the occasional mediocre minigame to break it up.

Oozing with soul, absolutely, but fun? Not really, and I say this as someone who grew up with these games on the N64.

To this day I hold that SM64 is the only game of the genre on the N64 thats actually still fun to play. No real bullshit with unlocking abilities, very little filler with a ton of variety in the stars, and its level design allows you to experiment and take different routes far more often than Rares offerings ever do. Its "simpler" on paper, but its simplicity gives it an elegance. Just moving around in SM64 is fun - Neither Banjo or DK ever really get close.

To be fair though, they do have way better boss fights than SM64, but its such a small part of the games it feels unfair to bring it up.

>tfw this was my first MM game and I consider it one of the best in the series

Best challenge, great OST, looks fucking tremendous for the hardware. Honestly was my favorite entry until 9 and 10 came out.
