They're different games.

Puyo 2 is the standard and the best version of it is on the Saturn, although Super Remix on the SNES is pretty good too.

N64 has two Puyo games, Sun and Yon. The former is decent and the second best game in the series though some people bitch about the Sun Puyo RNG. The latter killed Puyo though, adding character-specific abilities was a mistake and fucks up the balance.

And then lastly there's the original Puyo, which was reskinned into Mean Bean Machine and Kirby's Avalance. There's no real reason to play this version anymore since there's no offset rule which makes the gameplay far deeper and more exciting.
