nobody went beyond that. What was stopping a company from just making a console with 8 buttons?

also I know that that's not the objective order of when the # of buttons were introduced and that this is only counting face buttons but I mean with regards to face buttons.

I feel like the only time I've seen 8 buttons side by side is a modern arcade stick. What gives?

I disagree completely - they felt too plastic-y. Too hard.
The later Genesis and the Saturn controller had this nice rubberized feel. It made it soft to the touch. You could play them comfortably for hours.
I think the kidney bean controller is one of the best ever designed. I think the Saturn type-2 is the apotheosis of that design.

Saturn game prices are absolutely batshit, so the first thing you're gonna want to do is figure out a way to play pirated games. Years ago the go-to method was a modchip + action replay cart. Since then those pseudosaturn carts and the optical drive replacements have come out, so those are options as well, but I don't have any experience with them.

At any rate, I also recommend getting a "model 2" saturn controller, or the 3D controller. The american model 1 controller that you have is pretty dogshit whereas the other two options are arguably some of the best controllers ever made.

Is this the best retro controller? That D-Pad is absolutely perfect.

every Sóy nerd regards the saturn controller as the best controller with possibly one of the best d'pads if not the best of all...

Yes the Saturn controller actually had the best one. A lot of people foolishly give credit to Nintendo for making the best D-Pad but this actually isn't the case at all. In fact their D-Pads tore up your thumb after enough use. Even Sony gave us an upgrade to the Nintendo D-Pad. Their handhelds however have good D-Pads because they don't pop out and are rough like the ones on the controllers.

Its a real shame people are never going to realize how good of a controller the Saturn had. It is the perfect controller for 2D games.

Was the Sega Saturn really that amazing that it's worth getting even now, or was that just some old embellishment?

If it was, how can I tell if it is the original or "good" version? Is the box different?
